The BIG Book Club dives deeper!

“I can’t help but feel that the focus on race is being used as a distraction from what is really happening,”  BIG Book Club member

At our last regular meeting before a summer break, we realized that our discussion of race has led us to other, more foundational issues such as economics, democracy, and evil-doings, that affect everyone in the country.

We acknowledge that race, historically and now, is used as a method to create “the Other” – a means to create a visual hierarchy with which to divide the country and weaken the electorate. Following the thread of race as a mechanism to distract from broader issues, we expanded our discussion to the subsequent threat to democracy, the broadening gap between the rich and the poor, and the development of an oligarchy in the US.

Before the BIG Book Club resumes meetings in September, we plan to generate a list of books, podcasts, shows, articles and so forth, around which we might center our Book Club meetings. Want to join in? Email us at
